How to Plan Your Money When Your Income Varies
A simple way to plan when earnings change from week to week.
Gig and variable income makes a fixed monthly plan harder. Start with essential expenses: rent, food, travel to work, and any family commitments you cannot skip. Write those as a weekly or monthly figure you can recognise on a quiet week.
When a week pays more, set aside the essential amount first. Flexible spending comes after that. A good week is a chance to fill a gap, not a new lifestyle you then have to fund every week.
A contribution to a goal or an investment should be an amount you can pause without missing a necessary expense. If missing one instalment would mean borrowing for rent, that instalment does not belong in a plan yet.
Keep two numbers in your head: what you must pay, and what you are choosing to set aside. Review both when the work pattern changes. A calculator can illustrate a target. It cannot tell you that a particular product fits your week.
Keep in mind
Plan from a weak week, not from your best one.
Essentials are paid before any SIP.
A contribution you cannot pause is too large.
